old folk's home...by shaylee n siew ching

Old Folk’s Home, what is your first impression to it? Well, most of the peoples have the wrong impression towards old folk’s home. They will think that the home is a place that keeps the aged peoples which are abandoned by their children. However, this is definitely wrong. In fact, old folk’s home is just like a home which is a place or a big family that all the old folks stay together. Staying in the old folk’s home doesn’t mean that their children have abandoned them. Nowadays, the old folk’s home seems to give peoples a bad image on it’s role and function in our society. Therefore, there are several ways that can be taken to overcome this critical problem.



To build up a new image for the old folk’s home, firstly, we can change some of the rules about the entry requirement of the home. For example, before we accept the aged parents which are sent by their children to the home, we can have an interview with the children first. Besides that, we can also visit to their home to survey whether their parents really need others people’s care. By doing this way, we can always make the right decisions that provide a place to them in the old folk’s home.

Next, to let peoples feel that old folk’s home is not an abandoned home, we have to enforce their children to visit them at least once a week. The purpose of the enforcement is to avoid they feel lonely and abandoned by their children. And, this can ensure that children have pick up their responsibility on taking care and concerning about their parents. Other than that, we can organize some activities during the festivals too. For example, during Chinese New Year, all the old folks can have a dinner in old folk’s home with their family members. This can enhance closer relationship among family members when they are gathering together during the festivals.

On the other hand, we can create a buddy system among the old folks. Those who are just enter the home are referred as junior while the others are seniors of them. Seniors have to help and take care of their buddies so that the juniors can adapt to the new environment in short time. This buddy system enables the old folks to know more about each other and directly enhance their interactions and relationship. As a result, all of them in the home will not feel lonely although without their family.

In short, of course putting our parents in the old folks home is not a very negative practice. We still can show our care and concern for them by paying for their costs and occasionally visiting them. Thus, living in the old folks home is not a bad way to treat our parents.
