This is a difficult question to answer. Some people claim they always enjoy reading, but most struggles even to read a small piece of article. In fact, many university students and even the lecturers find it is hard to finish their course book. In order to change this situation into a ‘reading community’, many adjustments and system have to be done.
One of the biggest challenges facing by the government to produce this ‘reading community’ in Malaysia is low interest in reading among the public. Thus, we must create the reading culture among the children between 3 to 12 years old. The encouragement, support and passion of the parents are really needed to make this a reality. Parents should prepare enough reading material like story books, magazines and others at their home. They may also prepare a mini library at their home where they can spend time together.
The writer and publisher also need to play their role to produce a good and interesting reading material. They should not only focus on the fact, but they may add some illustration, comedy and opinion on their artwork. This may gain interest among the public to read it.
Another interesting system is by producing an electronic book known as E-book. Reader may download any story and article they want from the internet. Besides reduce the budget getting the expensive book, they also may save their time and energy.
Moreover, Malaysia should produce more movies based on the existing book or novel or vise versa. I believe this method may increase the interest of reading because the public want to know more about the story.
For the rural areas, a moveable library should be introduced. This library has to bring adequate book and visit the area at least once a week.
More reading competition with interesting prize has to be done all over the country and involved people from different ages. This system is like the NILAM program done in the school but it is more over wide.
And last but not least, the government has to prepare reading materials for the those who was unable to buy its. To make sure this group is not left behind, different kinds of books, magazines, newspapers have to distribute to them without any charge.
As educationalists continue to hunt for the secret to the ‘magic portion’ to produce a best leader in Malaysia, the answer is reading. A ‘reading community’ has to be built in Malaysia in order to achieve Wawasan 2020.
